sicks and stones may break my bones but words will do more damage

What are idle words and are we really judged for them?

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words...You've probably heard this saying or even said it in your childhood, yet in fact it is a complete lie!

We can all remember what some person or family member said to us when we were kids that has stuck with us forever.  Words are dangerous and more powerful that most people can even begin to imagine.

In the beginning

In the Bible, the Book of Genesis to be precise, it says "God said" twelve times. And after he said 'something' the world and everything in it was created.

I know I'm jumping in at the deep end here, but satan actually has no physical power in this earth.  The only thing he can do is speak to you and try and influence you to do or say something.

There is a verse in the Book of Proverbs that says "Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21).  It begins with 'Death' because we always talk crap first!

Words are things

Again, in the Bible, 1 Samuel 3:17 after Samuel has a dream, Eli says to him "what was this 'thing' that the Lord has said to you?"

When we speak, we plant seeds.  We water them with our belief and they come to fruition.

Before Jesus' cousin John the Baptist was born, the angel Gabriel visited Zechariah in the temple.  He told Zechariah that his wife Elizabeth would have a baby, even in her advanced years.  Zechariah scoffed at this and was instantly struck dumb until John was born and ready for him to be given his name. I believe that Zechariah was stopped from talking negatively because it would have changed history.  God knows that we mess things up by what we say!

Do you love me?

Before Jesus was crucified, he told to his disciple Peter that he (Peter) would deny him three times before the cockerel crowed - and it did!

But after Jesus resurrection, he met up with Peter and the disciples for breakfast (as you do!) and he specifically asked Peter three times "Do you love me?" to which Peter replied, "Of course I love you!"  I believe that the three questions and answers cancelled out what Peter had said earlier in order that Peter would be instrumental in building the Church.

In the Book of Genesis, God spoke the world in to being.  Abraham believed in the God who created new things out of nothing (Romans 4:17).  And we are to ask God for anything and he will give it (John 16:23).

In the Book of Psalms 37:4 it says that our thoughts are worthless.  They are, as we're only thinking, although God knows our thoughts, they cannot make anything happen.  To release the power we have inside us we need to pray/speak out loud.

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks! Luke 6:45.

Watch what you say!

God also told Joshua to keep the book of the law on his lips and to meditate on it day and night (Joshua 1:8).  So, keep speaking it out and keep thinking about it, which stops the enemy influencing our thoughts!

What can be used for good can also be used for bad - and that's what the dark side wants you to do.  We will be judged for every idle word, and that includes full-on baptised, born-again Christians (Matthew 12:36-37).

Part of being a Christian is to renew our minds.  There is so much nonsense that we take on board throughout our lives from so many people, that's why we've created this website so you can get a handle on the truth and make up your own mind.
